In this passage Paul tells us why elders are to be able to teach sound doctrine and refute those who contradict it – there are people in the church who are contradicting sound doctrine. You can identify them as ones who are rebellious and deceiving other families in the church. We learn who are the wolves in sheep’s clothing.

In this first part we examine the mandate from Scripture that the office of elder is reserved for men only and that he is to be above reproach. A summary statement used by Paul indication the elder is to live his life in a way that is worthy of imitating because he imitates Christ.
